SLippery When Wet enfileira hits, como, Living On A Prayer, You Give Love A Bad Name e Wanted Dead Or Alive. Há 33 anos #onthisday na memória do Rock Café.

Today we celebrate the 68th birthday of the great John Richard Deacon, bass player with Queen from 1971 to 1997, born on 19 August 1951 in Leicester. A fan of soul music since his childhood, Deacon played bass in a band called The Opposition (later The Art); in August 1969 he moved from Oadby to London to study at Chlesea College, where he obtained a First Class Honours degree in Electronics in 1971. In March of that year he joined Freddie, Brian and Roger and started his career in Queen. He decided to leave the band after Mercury’s death: before that, he accepted to finish some music for the last Queen album ‘Made In Heaven’, released in 1995. Thank you Deaky. Happy birthday!

Congratulations to Eliza McCartney (@eliza_mac_), who #onthisday won bronze in the Women's Pole Vault at the 2016 Olympic Games Rio de Janiero! McCartney currently holds both the New Zealand and Oceania records with a towering 4.94m. At 22 years of age, she has her sights set even higher... She's part of our #StandingontheShoulders exhibition. With a year to go until the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she's set a high bar which we've no doubt she'll cross.

ON THIS DAY IN HERSTORY: The 19th amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ratified on this day in 1920. Achieving this milestone was a long and arduous struggle - women organized, petitioned, marched, lobbied and practiced civil disobedience to reach what many considered a radical change to the Constitution.
•
It took activists and reformers nearly 100 years to win the right to vote.
•
Few early supporters lived to see the ratification of the 19th amendment. And sadly, the victory did not protect all women - legal barriers would prevent women of color from voting for years to come.

🌼 This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of Woodstock Music Festival, which took place August 15-18, 1969 in Bethel, New York and was attended by over 400,000 people. The last set of the weekend was a defining performance by Jimi Hendrix, which included a standout version of the Star Spangled Banner, a powerful performance and protest in the midst of the Vietnam War and directly following the Civil Rights movement. ✌🏾 #jimihendrix #onthisday #woodstock50

• One year ago today, @sirkeaggy took me to swing dance at Disneyland, and I got my first glimpse into something I really wanted to pursue. Unfortunately it took me 7 months to finally find a place that allowed me to fully immerse myself into learning swing, but I have this fella to thank for giving me a taste of what I’d be getting myself into! I had an absolute blast, and Cameron was so fun and easy to dance with for my first time on the dance floor! Crazy to think that this video was from my very first time, and now I’ve integrated swing dancing into my life every week!😌💃🏻 Video credit: the lovely @missgolden_lady 💚 • // #swingdancewithruby #throwback #oneyearago #onthisday #latergram #swingdance #swingdancing #swingdancer #swingdanceatdisneyland #saturdaynights #fantasyland #fantasyfaire #dancing #disneylandresort #disneyland

This day (18 August) in 1958, the controversial novel, Lolita, was published in the United States.

It was written by Russian-American novelist Vladimir Nabokov and first published in Paris in 1955 by Olympia Press. When the novel was released in the US, it created a cultural and literary sensation.

The novel's story revolves around an adult man’s obsession with a 12-year-old girl. He's shown to be a middle-aged literature professor with the pseudonym Humbert Humbert. He lusts obsessively after 12-year-old girl Dolores Haze, whom he fondly calls "Lolita." Although it was a masterpiece, it attracted controversy due to its subject.
The novel went on to become a bestseller. Many authors consider it the greatest work of the 20th century, and it has been included in several lists of best books, such as Time's List of the 100 Best Novels. It was also adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick in 1962.

Fun Fact - It had been rejected by four publishers before being accepted.

SLIPPERY WHEN WET 33rd Anniversary Celebration!!
The Party starts with a Bang, as the Instrumental PINK FLAMINGOS (composed by keyboardist David "The King Of Keys" Bryan) introduces LET IT ROCK, and a New Rock & Roll Theme is born!!
I remember spending a lot of time listening this Record on my Dad's Turntable, 4 or 5 time a day, everyday. Totally obsessed and I love it!! I played countless hours of Great Rock Music over the years, on top of the list there's BON JOVI's SLIPPERY WHEN WET and NEW JERSEY definitely more than any other!! It took more than a century for white women in the United States to earn the right to vote — and decades more for Black American women to overcome racist laws and policies that would prevent them from exercising that right freely. #Onthisday in 1920, the 19th Amendment — which outlawed voting discrimination by sex –– took effect. On this day in 2018, a record number of women — including many women of color — and LGBTQ+ candidates are not only voting, they are running for office 🇺🇸🗳 #vote | Gif via @nytgender by @kayeblegvad

*Late Post* This day (17 August) in 1908, the first animated cartoon, Fantasmagorie, was released.

The film was made by French caricaturist, cartoonist and animator Émile Cohl. It was a type of a hand-drawn animation. The title is a reference to the “fantasmograph”, a mid-19th century variant of the magic lantern that projected ghostly images on to surrounding walls. 'Fantasmagorie' is defined as "a constantly shifting complex succession of things seen or imagined." The film largely consists of a stick man moving about and encountering all manner of morphing objects. The main characters are a clown and a gentleman.

Cohl took five months to complete the film. To create the final 1 minute 20 seconds film, he made 700 drawings by tracing and making variations when needed. After completion, it was released by the Gaumont company in Paris.

Emile Cohl is called the 'father of animated cartoon'.

So many of us continue to struggle with the aesthetics of what butterfly rashes do to our skin, when there's options to truly reduce the appearance of the rashes
#Facebook #OnThisDay reminds me of just how bad things were at certain parts of my journey. The 75lbs were off for good, but my skin was doing it's own thing.
Your skin is often the first thing people notice , and the insecurities went from feeling uncomfortable in my clothes (and fixing that) to feeling uncomfortable in my skin (and not thinking anything would work) 🙈👎🏿 I also had to come to terms with the fact that some of my cheat meal choices were causing the flare ups/ butterfly rashes (ownership of my own actions and NOT the disease 💯) Do you know someone who wants to improve their skin??? Are YOU looking to improve yours ?

Dm to schedule your/ their skin wellness evaluation!! Product is good for teens as well!

Just months prior to Confederation the United States purchased Alaska, sparking fears of a reinvigorated Manifest Destiny that would eventually see Ruperts land and perhaps Canada swallowed up by the Union. After unifying the new Dominion set its eyes on Ruperts land, the domain of the struggling Hudson’s Bay Company - the days of the fur trade were gone and in 1869 the HBC, under pressure from London reluctantly sold their territory to Canada. No Indigenous representatives were spoken to which left the populations very nervous though this was felt nowhere stronger than in Red River Colony. The Métis seized Fort Garry, a previous headquarters of the HBC and arrested any opposition in November 1869. A month later the Métis under Louis Riel declared a provisional government on 8 December 1869. These two acts angered Ottawa which saw the Métis as an obstacle in the way of securing rightfully Canadian land. After the government was formed, Prime Minister Macdonald dispatched Donald Smith, who’s job was to report on concerns the Métis had. After the report came back in April 1870 Noël-Joseph Ritchot, John Black and Alfred Scott were invited to Ottawa, they were representatives of Riel’s government and would hold several meetings with both Sir. John A. Macdonald and Sir. George-Étienne Cartier to discuss Red Rivers entry into Confederation. After weeks of negotiations and a promise by Ottawa to respect the rights of the Métis, Red River Colony was admitted into Confederation as the Province of Manitoba on 15 July 1870. The Province was granted an insignificant plot of land hugging the US border. Just a month after being admitted into Confederation, a Canadian Regiment under Colonel Wolseley was dispatched to put an end to Riel and his provisional government. Riel, who was warned in advance fled to the United States where he would remain until 1885. Ottawa, tired of playing politics got what it wanted all along, Riel was gone, a Province was established and the road to the Pacific was once again open.

#OnThisDay 99 years ago, the 19th Amendment secured ratification, finally establishing women’s right to vote in the United States. Upon its adoption, 26 million American women were enfranchised. Can you believe women have had the right to vote for fewer than 100 years? 🚺
Tennessee was the last of the required 36 states to approve the amendment. 24-year-old freshman state representative Harry T. Burn ultimately broke a tie and voted in favor of the amendment after his mother, Febb Ensminger Burn, sent him a letter urging him to vote for women’s suffrage. 📝

In Febb Burn’s letter to her son, pictured here, she told her son, “Hurrah and vote for suffrage and don’t keep them in doubt.” After casting his vote, Harry Burn explained, “I knew that a mother’s advice is always safest for a boy to follow, and my mother wanted me to vote for ratification.” 🗣

#OnThisDay - In 1990, @nigelbennofficial beat Iran Barkley by TKO in round 1 of 12 to retain the WBO Middleweight title.
~
Since Barkley’s win against Hearns, he had lost to Michael Nunn & Roberto Duran & this was his 3rd consecutive loss. If the 3 knockdown rules wasn’t in effect for this fight, I reckon it could’ve gone down as one of the best fights of the year, I doubt it would’ve lasted much longer though but Benn himself was stunned & hurt by a left hook in the 1st round.
~
It went down as one of the quickest & explosive wins at the highest level in boxing history.

English painter John Everett was born in #onthisday 1876. In the late 1890s, Everett moved to London from Dorchester, and trained at Slade School of Fine Art. During this time, he developed a passion for seafaring, and in 1898 embarked aboard the sailing ship 'Iquique', travelling to Sydney. This was the first of his 16 voyages, and it was when Everett established marine painting as his speciality.
In the spring of 1918, during the First World War, the Ministry of Information commissioned Everett to make drawings and paintings of wartime London and the Thames, in particular of the visual effects of ‘dazzle’ camouflage shipping.
Everett’s 1,058 oil paintings form one of the UK’s largest collections by a single artist. Most of these paintings were bequeathed to the National Maritime Museum in 1949, after his death. ‘Converting the SS ‘Naneric’ into an Armed Cruiser’, ‘A convoy’, 'The Deck of the 'Birkdale'' and ' A view of the 'Endymion' aft in fair weather' are on display at the Queen’s House, alongside many other paintings by Everett.
