‪Bobby Robson was born #OnThisDay in 1933. A fine player with Fulham, WBA & England, but it’s as a manager he truly excelled - Fulham, Ipswich Town, England, PSV, Sporting, Porto, Barcelona & Newcastle Utd. A great man 👌.‬

She was a popular queen with her subjects, at first, in a rather similar way to her mother. Queen Mary realised that the Lady Jane was only a pawn and had her imprisoned, but it got to a point where Lady Jane became much too dangerous, and the Queen was forced to execute her to protect her position. It is almost certain that she would have avoided executing her if she could’ve. Approaching 40, but still menstruating and thought to be fertile, Queen Mary turned to finding a husband. She settled on her cousin, Prince Felipe of Spain, 11 years younger than her, and they married on 25 July 1554. This marriage was widely unpopular. In September, the Queen gained weight, ceased menstruating, and experienced morning sickness. Her physicians all came to the conclusion that she was pregnant. Parliament passed an act making King Philip, her husband, regent in the event of her death in childbirth. In April 1555, the Lady Elizabeth her sister was released from house arrest and called to court to witness the birth. It is thought that whilst the Queen was in confinement, King Philip was intending to marry her younger sister if she died in childbirth. Soon, the news spread throughout London that she had given birth to a healthy son, and celebrations were held. This news was false, and the Queen had not delivered. It was simply thought that the dates had been miscalculated, until her abdomen returned to its normal size in July and she stopped showing signs of pregnancy. It is thought by some to be simply a case of a false pregnancy, although others have suggested choriocarcinoma, which she showed symptoms of. The Queen considered the false pregnancy to be “God’s punishment” for having “tolerated heretics” in her realm. Heavily influenced by her husband, she burned Protestants at the stake, for which she is constantly criticised. King Philip was constantly away ruling his own country, Spain, leaving Queen Mary severely depressed in his absence. He visited his wife in England in 1557, and it was thought that the Queen was yet again pregnant. No baby came, again, and she passed away in pain on 17 November 1558 at the age of 42, succeeded by the Lady Elizabeth.

Queen Jane was kind to Princess Mary, and convinced the King to reconcile with his eldest daughter. At the time she was invited back to court, Princess Mary had not spoken to her father for 3 years. She was granted a new household and no longer lived as a servant. Sadly, the next year, Queen Jane died from childbed fever after delivering of a son, Prince Edward. Princess Mary, by then 21, was appointed as godmother to her baby brother, and acted as chief mourner at Queen Jane’s funeral. From late 1539, she was courted by the Duke of Palatine-Neuberg, and many expected a wedding as they seemed to have genuine feelings for one another despite their religious differences. However, King Henry prevented the marriage, as he still deemed the Princess illegitimate. At court in the 1540s whilst her father was between his fourth and fifth marriages, she acted as a hostess. In 1543, the King married the Lady Latimer, Katheryn Parr, who fully reconciled him with both his daughters and was the reason they were both returned to the line of succession after Prince Edward. King Henry died in 1547, and was succeeded by Prince Edward. For most of her brother’s reign, Princess Mary stayed away from court. There was a plot in 1550 to smuggle her out of England and into the safety of Catholic Europe when the punishment of Catholics in England became serious, although this plot eventually came to nothing and the Princess remained in England. At Christmas of the same year, she was at court, and her brother publicly humiliated her and reduced her and himself to tears in an argument over religion. Princess Mary refused every demand from King Edward that she convert to Protestantism, and instead remained a devout Catholic. In 1553, King Edward became ill with tuberculosis and eventually succumbed to the disease. In his will, he skipped over his two sisters and instead named the Lady Jane Grey, the granddaughter of Princess Mary Tudor his aunt, as the heir to the throne. Princess Mary gathered troops and many supported her, and after 9 days she overthrew the Lady Jane and took her rightful place as Queen of England at the age of 37.

Meanwhile, her parents’ marriage was breaking down. King Henry was disappointed by his lack of a male heir, and was eager to remarry, having taken a fancy to one of the Queen’s ladies, the Lady Anne Boleyn. The King was trying to get his marriage annulled, although the Pope would not grant it. The excuse he gave was that his marriage was unclean as Queen Katherine had previously been married to his elder brother, but she insisted until her dying day that it was not consummated and therefore her marriage to King Henry was legal and valid. From 1531, the Princess was constantly ill from irregular and painful menstruation and depression, all while she was not permitted to see her mother. The 1530s were especially hard for Princess Mary. In 1533, King Henry declared his marriage to Queen Katherine invalid and Princess Mary illegitimate, then married the Lady Anne Boleyn, who was already heavily pregnant with his child. Princess Mary would not accept this, refusing to call herself “Lady” instead of “Princess” and recognising her mother as the only true queen. When her half-sister the Lady Elizabeth was born, her place in the line of succession was transferred to her sister. Princess Mary was bullied and forced to sign away her legitimacy, and then forced to join the household of her half-sister as a servant as punishment for her refusing to recognise her father’s remarriage as valid. Princess Mary suffered constant emotional abuse from her father and new stepmother, which impacted her for the rest of her life. She spent her early days in her sister’s household crying hysterically in her chambers. Despite this, she harboured no ill feelings towards her little sister, and surely loved her very much. In late 1533, she started becoming constantly ill, which her physician attributed to her “ill treatment”. She was refused permission to see her mother, and in 1536 when her mother died, she was inconsolable and was forbidden from attending her funeral. Later that year, the Lady Anne fell from grace and was executed, then the King married Jane Seymour.

On this day 503 years ago, the future Queen Mary I of England was born to King Henry VIII of England and his first wife, Queen Katherine. She was their fifth child, and the only one to survive infancy, before her there had been a miscarriage, 2 stillbirths, and a boy who died in infancy. The King was at least a little disappointed that she was not a boy, but he had faith in his wife, saying that if it was a girl this time then boys would surely follow. Her first betrothal came about when she was 2, and she was betrothed to the infant heir to the French throne, Dauphin François. Princess Mary was an intelligent and precocious child, she could play the virginals by the age of 4. She was given a good education, a great part of it coming from her mother who hired a humanist and commissioned him to write a treatise on the education of girls. She studied French, Spanish, music, dance, perhaps Greek, and by the age of 9 she could read and write in Latin. When she was 6-years-old, she was betrothed to her first cousin the Holy Roman Emperor, who was 16 years older than her, after her first betrothal had been dissolved the previous year. Despite her father’s affection for her, when she was 9, it was clear he would have no more children with Queen Katherine. After Princess Mary, it was written in 1517 that “the Queen is supposed to be pregnant” suggesting a possible miscarriage, and in 1518 the Queen delivered of her very last child, a premature daughter who did not live long enough to be named. In 1525, Princess Mary was sent to rule over the Council of Wales and the Marches, making her de facto Princess of Wales. She was commonly called the Princess of Wales, although was never formally given the title. Queen Katherine was very upset when separated from her daughter. The Princess spent 3 years in the Welsh Marches, making regular visits to court, and in 1528 she returned to the Home Counties. In 1527, she was betrothed again, this time to the French King’s second son, Prince Henri, Duke of Orléans, her betrothal to the Emperor being called off in 1525.

Three strikes
Against my bosom
Infecting my blossom
My flower blooms
In black and white
Instead of glitter
Pollen studies
The laws of attraction
Further examination
The dirt stays dirty
The scum of the pond
Coats the back of my throat
I go away
And find my breath
I catch my breath
And share my wisdom
With my blossom
My hand on my bosom
A promise to bloom
Three strikes
The gong chitter chatters
A billowy baritone
Signaling war
Announcing the change of seasons
I steal another breath
Before the coming frost
You will die after i do

#onthisday Il 18 febbraio 1930 fu scoperto Plutone.

Punto e a capo insomma.
#astronomia #astrofisica #scienza #plutone #divulgazionescientifica

The famous reformer Martin Luther died #onthisday in 1546 at the age of 63 (which is quite old for that time). This portrait of Luther by Lucas Cranach the Elder (workshop) shapes our picture of what Luther looked like until today. Cranach and his workshop distributed this image in multiple iterations. Although the year 1533 is written on the portrait, an examination of the wood has proven that it can’t be older than 1537.

Jasper Francis Cropsey was born #onthisday in 1823 in Rossville, #StatenIsland, #NewYork. Growing up in a rural environment meant the artist had little to no exposure to pictures or art. From his youth, he was weak-bodied and suffered illnesses which kept him from full year schooling. Cropsey went on to pursue a career in #architecture and his employer encouraged him to venture into #watercolor and oil by giving him supplies and providing his private office as a studio before and after work. Cropsey’s vigorous drawing and bright palette distinguish him from many of his own generation. He inherited Thomas Cole’s interest in American autumn scenes yet developed brilliant paintings much closer to actuality in coloristic intensity than those of #Cole. Shown here is, 'Palisades Opposite Hastings-on-Hudson, 1887.' #linkinbio for more information and to inquire about this work. #HappyBirthday

On This Day in 1856

Fillmore runs again

The American Party, also known as the Know-Nothings, meet in Philadelphia and nominate former president Millard Fillmore as their first presidential candidate. Though the group organized on an anti-immigrant platform, individual members, when asked about their views, would reply that they 'know nothing.' Fillmore will win only one state, and the party will soon cease to exist. #onthisday #americanparty #knownothingparty #philadelphia #millardfillmore #presidentialcandidate #antiimmigrant #knownothing

[197/365] #onthisday TWO whole years ago, this gem of a human and I went on a day date to go play in Riverside park. The day was unseasonably warm, and it was great to be outside.

As it often has happened in our friendship, I recall a lot of great soul-searching conversation, lots of laughter, and quite possibly some goal-setting/future-dreaming talk. One of those talking points: “It would be great to be roommates!” Here we are 2 years later - still the best of friends and now the best of #roommates. I’m so thankful for @laurasatthehelm. She makes me smile when I need it most.

Even though it’s Monday, she’s my #wcw #sappy #friendship

This building behind me is a testament to just how long the arc of the moral universe really is, and also to the men and women who have constantly strived to bend that arc toward justice.

For it was here, #OnThisDay in 1861, that the Inaugural Parade for Jefferson Davis' swearing in ceremony as the first (and thankfully only) President of the Confederate States of America took place. But it was also here, in the space of just over a century, where a crowd of more than 25,000 marchers arrived on these very same steps from Selma, to demand an end to the practices that had prevented black people from exercising their right to vote ever since emancipation from slavery.

The tired yet jubilant marchers who gathered here on that day would go on to hear Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. deliver his now iconic speech, "How Long, not long." Reminding the marchers that while "The arc of the moral universe is long, it bends toward justice." But here's the thing people, just as those who gathered on that day showed us - it doesn't bend on its own, it bends because we put our hands on that arc and we bend it in the direction of justice. And in all honesty that's how change really happens. It always starts with you.

I’m excited to present to you a very special, and Presidential, #mustachemonday offering to celebrate #presidentsday 2019! Did you know that only four presidents wore traditional mustaches? And all of those presidents were elected between the years 1880 and 1908! “The mustache years” ™️ encompass presidents 21-27 with the exception of our 23rd president. Can you name all four #mustachioed presidents without cheating?! What about the dork who didn’t wear a mustache?! Good luck, and happy mustache hunting!!👴🏻👴🏼👴🏻 #history #onthisday #facialhair #mustaches #mustache_club #mustache #presidential #presidentsday #onthisdayinhistory #themoreyouknow #themoreyouknow🌈

The torment of St Anthony ~ Michelangelo ~ 1487-88 ~ Kimbell Gallery, Texas.

On this day 455 years ago in 1564, Master sculptor and painter Michelangelo drew his last breath. He left a lasting legacy of artwork to admire, the Sistine chapel in the Vatican, the famous sculptures of David found in Florence, Moses and La Pieta in Rome. Not only a Sculptor and painter but also as an architect and poet, having been given the commission of rebuilding St.Peters Basilica.

𝕿𝖍𝖊 𝕱𝖊𝖆𝖘𝖙 𝖔𝖋 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝕻𝖍𝖊𝖆𝖘𝖆𝖓𝖙

Todays historical lip look is inspired by Duke Philip (the Good) of Burgundy, who vowed to fight for the defense of the Christian faith.
To win his court over he set out a large and lavish feast. Its purpose was to promote a crusade against the Turks, who had taken Constantinople the year before. The crusade never took place.
The second image on this post is a painting done by an anonymous sixteenth-century artist and I used the warmer colours in the torch lights and dresses as inspiration, as well as the pearls.
