I watched the Fyre Festival documentary recently and I’m not sure whether to feel angry or sad with the state of the world we live in. Despite the obvious horrors, one thing really shocked and stayed with me. When guests started to arrive and realised they just had to grab a tent or they’d have no where to sleep, it turns in to a free-for-all. Afterwards, one guy told Netflix in an interview that he and his friends didn’t want neighbours and so started destroying the tents around them. Selfish behaviour at its worst.
No one was there for the music or community - they were there to get photos for Instagram and hopefully meet a celebrity or two. It’s a depressing reality. The event was a status enhancer at best and shone a very bright light on the negative impact of social media. But, instead of dwelling on the negative I think it’s important to celebrate the positive. There are some incredible people out there on social media using their large followings to demand change and create positive impact, we should be encouraging the younger generation to follow in their footsteps.
