It was Robin Lane Fox in the FT who alerted me to Charmed Lives in Greece, a small exquisite show at the BM of paintings, photographs and letters of three friends - Ghika, Johnny Craxton and Paddy Leigh Fermor. Each settled in new built houses in Greece - Hydra, Kardamyli, Corfu and Crete. The work is delightful and god to see P L F’s little typewriter on display - this painting by Craxton (1921-2009) is Hotel by the Sea 1946 on the island of Poros #britishmuseum #charmedlivesingreece #ghika #johncraxton #paddyleighfermor #greece🇬🇷 #exhibition

Charmed Lives in Greece: Niko Ghika, John Craxton, Patrick Leigh Fermor at the @britishmuseum exploring the friendship between the two artists and writer. I remember Ghika’s portrait of John, looking like an El Greco saint, hanging on the wall of his dark sitting room in Hampstead on the occasions when I went to have tea with him: Victoria sponge, Lapsang Souchong, followed swiftly by whiskey (or another spirit). When I went to the Cyclades in 2007 John gave me advice on where to go. I wish I’d written it down. It also reminded me that when I was 17 I bought a copy of Leigh Fermor’s book ‘Between the Woods and the Water’ with a cover by Craxton, not really knowing who either were at the time. #johncraxton #patrickleighfermor #nikoghika #ghika #greece #modernbritishart #greekart

Bonus post for the day: Pete and I went to the British Museum yesterday to see the Ghika, Craxton and Leigh Fermor exhibition, and it was really excellent. I didn’t take any photos inside the exhibition, apart from a blurry one of a comically elongated Greek cat, but did photograph this excellent drawing by a child at the Windsor Greek School, shown at the end

The Charmed Lives exhibition @britishmuseum was perfect for the first cold day of Spring. I loved seeing the Ghika’s, never heard of him before I must admit. The show is about the friendship of artists Ghika & John Craxton & writer Patrick Leigh Fermor. They spent most of their time in Greece after the war. The colours and carefree feeling are just what I needed to warm my heart. (Though we couldn’t help but wonder - as usual - where the children were and what about the wives... were they doing all the cooking and childcare or did they have servants to make it all possible ?!) #greece #britishmuseum #johncraxton #patrickleighfermor #ghika #art #painting #charmedlife

‘For the houses, as though in protest against the masterless swirl of rock, are cubic, solid, and severe… they might have been sliced and squared out of goat’s cheese. The houses and the rocks alike thrust into the air an infinity of sharp and light-reflecting facets.’ – travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor describes the Greek island of Hydra in 1964.
Leigh Fermor was friends with Greek artist Niko Ghika who painted this view of Hydra port at sunset in 1957–1960. They lived together with British artist John Craxton at Ghika’s ancestral home on Hydra, each making works influenced by the landscape, culture and people of the island. ‘Black Sun’ by artist Niko Ghika depicts a scene from the Greek island of Hydra. Ghika was one of the best-known modern Greek painters, and was active from the 1920s up until his death in the 1990s. He never tired of painting the striking, rocky landscape of Hydra, and lived there in the Ghika family home for many years. The 18th-century mansion was built by the artist’s great-great-great-grandfather, and stood at the top of a steep hill overlooking the town. The house played host to numerous artists and writers throughout the years, and was where Ghika forged strong friendships with artist John Craxton and writer Patrick Leigh Fermor. British artist John Craxton moved to the Greek island of Crete in 1960. He found an old house and studio by the harbour in the town of Chania, and painted the people, landscapes and animals he encountered on the island. The rowdy harbourside tavernas allowed him to get close to the sailors who would come and go from the port. Look closely and you can see some intriguing features in this painting – the artist’s signature appears on the packet of cigarettes, and the inscription at the top says ‘Breaking [of plates] is forbidden by law’. Craxton was good friends with Greek artist Niko Ghika and British writer Patrick Leigh Fermor, and the three shared a love for Greece – our new free exhibition explores their friendship and the works they produced while living in the country. Charmed Lives in Greece: Ghika, Craxton and Leigh Fermor
Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 6:30 pm, at The University Club, 1 West 54th Street, New York City. The event is free of charge, but please note, due to capacity constraints, only registered attendees will be admitted to this event. RSVP: info@hacfoundation.org

The Hellenic-American Cultural Foundation, with the support of the Benaki Museum, welcomes a presentation by renowned art historian Evita Arapoglou on the exhibition currently at The British Museum “Charmed Lives in Greece: Ghika, Craxton, Leigh Fermor.” Ms. Arapoglou helped create, and served as co-curator for, the exhibition, which was previously shown at the Benaki Museum in Athens and the A. G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia.

The Greek painter Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghikas, the British painter John Craxton and the British writer Sir Patrick Leigh Fermor first met at the end of World War II. Their close friendship endured for more than fifty years, and their shared love of the Greek world deeply influenced their respective works. Images of Ghikas’ glorious landscape paintings and of Craxton’s vividly evocative scenes from everyday life, and excerpts from Leigh Fermor’s eloquent texts, are combined in a narrative of this trio’s remarkable friendship and of the unforgettable charm of life in Greece. The presentation is a vivid stroll through these artists’ intertwined lives in Mani, Crete, Hydra and Corfu.

A reception with Evita Arapoglou will follow the program.
