Ferrari 288 GTO (1983-1987)
When the Ferrari 288 GTO was released back in 1983, it was an amazing piece of kit and one that had everything necessary to be the best sports car of that era. The car also bore a name steeped in Ferrari history: GTO – Gran Turismo Omologata.
The GTO came with a 2.8lt twin turbocharged V8, capable of making 400hp and could blast through the 0-60mph in just under 5 seconds. Top speed was 189 mph which made it the fastest production car of the time. The GTO had been conceived as a race car for the FISA Group B racing tracks but that series never got the support from manufactures it needed and it never took off. Because of the demise of the no-holds barred Group B super car series almost all of the GTO's
became road cars.
While the 288 GTO got its familiar good looks from the Ferrari 308, the car driven by Tom Selleck in his hit tv show, Magnum P.I. who was was one of the poster stars of the 1980s. There were several differences between the two cars, the GTO had 100hp more, it was lighter, it had a wider rear end that accommodated fatter rear tires to put the power down onto the asphalt and had spoilers to keep everything stuck to the road. While Magnum's
Ferrari 308 was a fast car, this super-rare Ferrari 288 GTO (272 were made) was in a different league.
As well as being very rare and very fast, it is a singularly beautiful car, subtly more muscular than the car it was based upon. As you can see it is pretty photogenic, but if you are lucky enough to see one in person, it looks even better.
The 288 GTO in my humble opinion is one of the best cars ever to have come out of Maranello.
