My non-jewelry posts never do too well, but I really wanted to share this piece. (Please excuse the poor quality photos. It's
so reflective, it was hard to capture!) It is a Henry Wilkinson & Co. Victorian Assyrian revival meat cover, circa 1860. I've
only ever seen a stoneware jug with an Assyrian revival scene on it. In my wildest fantasies, I dreamed that there would be serving pieces out in the world with an Assyrian revival motif on them - like serving platters or even better, a teapot! In the back of my mind, I felt perhaps there was something out there in that vein, but one never really knows. Assyrian revival is such a rare style anyway, maybe it just wasn't
popular enough to make wares out of. Then this magnificent piece turned up and all my dreams came true! It is etched with the surname Frazer, the original owners of the piece. This meat cover was deaccessioned from the Tudor Place Foundation in order to benefit their conservation funds. My parents bought this meat dome as a wedding gift for me and my husband, a year late, but they wanted to wait to find something truly special ... and spectacular! (Which they absolutely knocked it out of the park!) Not only is this a truly remarkable piece, I'm
so glad the money spent to purchase it went to help conserve other items of the past. This piece means so much to me, as an Assyriologist, but represents my brother so well too, who is an art conservator, so it was truly all encompassing and a beautiful representation of all that is wonderful. It is now my life's
mission to find other pieces to go with this. I did come across an Assyrian revival serving platter and cover from the same company, sold many moons ago at auction, but other than these two pieces, there isn't
anything else out there on the internet. Surely there are other things, hidden, waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. If anyone finds anything Assyrian revival related, not just serving ware, hit me up! I want it all! .
