Max Ernst was a German painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and poet. Ernst was a primary pioneer of the Dada movement and Surrealism in the early 1900's.
This reference was mentioned in one of my favorite Gilmore Girl episodes "You Jump, I Jump, Jack" - sound familiar? It was the episode Rory went to her first Life and Death Brigade shindig. She asks one of the guys a question and he answers "May I quote Max Ernst?" Rory gives him permission and then he walks away without saying anything. It was a surreal response as was the entire night. It was a Max Ernst kind of night!

But I wish I knew how he manages to make every single soul he ever meets think he’s the absolute tops.  I wish I knew how he makes newspapermen, every single one of them, think everything he does is just right. 1928- Sergei Rachmaninoff, along with Richard Strauss, probably 2 of the last great romantic composers. By the early 1940s, the piano concerto was already a well worn genre (founded by Mozart in the 1700s) and the fact that Rachmaninoff and Strauss could still bring so much freshness to piano concertos, piano works, vocal and orchestral works was quite an amazing feat. #art #artist #musicalartist #romanticomposer #concerto #rachmaninoff #strauss #orchestral #classicalmusic #classicalcomposer #20thcentury #music

Moon on the Lake ~ Leon Dabo Date: 1907, oil on canvas.

.
Leon Dabo (July 9, 1864 – November 7, 1960) was an American tonalist landscape artist best known for his paintings of New York, particularly the Hudson Valley. His paintings were known for their feeling of spaciousness, with large areas of the canvas that had little but land, sea, or clouds. During his peak, he was considered a master of his art, earning praise from such luminaries as John Spargo, Bliss Carman, Benjamin De Casseres, Edwin Markham, and Anatole Le Braz. (Wikipedia).
.
.
Tonalism was an artistic style that emerged in the 1880s when American artists began to paint landscape forms with an overall tone of colored atmosphere or mist. Between 1880 and 1915, dark, neutral hues such as gray, brown or blue, often dominated compositions by artists associated with the style. During the late 1890s, American art critics began to use the term "tonal" to describe these works.

A ginkgo branch sprouts upwards in so many layers that it almost breaks through its platinum framework of 54 rose cut diamonds. This vivid ambience is even more intensified with a hint of green colour on top of the warm yellow leaves. 🌿

Seen the "Child with Calla Lily Leaves" fountain at Chestnut and Valentine streets in West Newton? Here's the story behind it: sculptor Anne Whitney created it in memory of Catherine Porter Lambert, who lived at 128 Chestnut Street; it was given to the City of Newton in 1903. Whitney received many prominent commissions in her lifetime. Her statues of Leif Erikson and Charles Sumner still stand in Boston. She lived in a "Boston marriage" and is buried with her long time partner, the painter Addy Manning, at @mountauburncemetery . Celebrate the life of one of the most prolific composers of the 20th century, Darius Milhaud, who passed away on this day in 1974. Milhaud lived in Brazil during the First World War, which lead him to write Brazilian-themed compositions, such as 'Saudades do Brasil'. He was then part of the famed group of French composers in the 20s, called 'Les Six', which included the likes of Francis Poulenc and Arthur Honegger. In this period he wrote one his best known pieces, the ballet 'Le Bœuf sur let toit', which lends its name to the legendary cabaret in Paris they frequented. Jazz was a big influence on him, which can be heard in his ballet 'La Création du Monde'. He was also a famed teacher, teaching the likes of Dave Brubeck and Burt Bacharach, and at the Paris Conservatoire.

It was in the village of Collioure, on the Côte Vermeille in the southeast of France, where French painter André Derain made his first characteristic landscape paintings with strong colours in a wild, painterly style. In the Summer of 1905 Fauvism was born. Derain's painting 'Le Phare de Collioure', made in the picturesque harbour with the tower of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels is part of the collection of @museedartmodernedeparis today. Many painters would follow in Derain's slipstream. Today, their paintings of Collioure are in museums and private collections all around the World. And in Collioure? In Collioure the magnificent views are still ready to be discovered by new generations of artists. #collioure #birthplaceoffauvism #andrederain #fauvism #frenchpainting #20thcentury #portdecollioure

77 years ago today on 22nd June 1941, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa; the invasion of the Soviet Union. One could argue that this was the beginning of the end for the Nazis. To take on the might of the Soviet Union sealed their fate in the war’s following years - Stalingrad, Kursk, through to the Battle of Berlin in 1945. The Eastern Front would be the most costly theater of World War II. This was not simply a conflict of territory, but of extreme political and social ideologies. Millions of people were killed; both civilian and military.

If you don't know who this character is, y'all were living under a rock! Back in the early '70s where the martial arts genre was (and still is!) booming, Marvel Comics created Shang Chi, son of the infamous Fu Manchu (they even modeled the character after Bruce Lee). Unlike his father, he decided to become a superhero and British agent. He has no superpowers, but his martial arts skills were almost uncanny and superhuman. His only power, recently, is to duplicate himself and is one of the few long running comics for an Asian character (1973-1983, 125 issues). He even teamed with Spider-Man and the Thing (of the Fantastic Four). He made a comeback in the '90s , and is now is a recent Avenger. Can he go toe to toe with Captain America, DareDevil and Iron Fist? Of course! Batman, Nightwing, or even Black Panther??? I don't know. What do you think?

An Antique #MagicLantern or #LaternaMagica #madeingermany by Gebruder Bing Nuremberg (GBN) in the early #20thcentury. Basically an original #SlideProjector of the time, used both as toys for entertainment as well as an educational tool. They contained oil lamps to illuminate the "glass plates" with images (hence the chimney on the #projector.) Considered invented by the #Dutch scientist Christiaan #Huygens in the mid #17thcentury, these Magic Lanterns became common in the mid #18thcentury. They were used very early on for #Phantasmagoria. Most slides/plates were handdrawn/painted, but as photography became more common, many of #filmstrips held actual photographs. I took this a few year ago of a #CameraStore window in #KirchheimTeck Germany; they had a *lot* of #vinatagecameras

I was going to do SFS for a very long time, but I was scared.🙈 I really hope for your support! It will be very pleasant for me if you tell about me on your page, because I really want so many people to believe that fairy tales can be realized, and inspired by things that I do.💖⠀
I will tell you about several interesting pages and about someone else in the stories and I will hold a raffle with postcards for all participants using random number generator.✉️⠀
I bought Postcards during my visits to castles in France, so they will definitely bring you a piece of happiness!🏰⠀

Rules of SFS:⠀

1. Follow me and like 3 last photos.⠀

2. Choose favorite photo with me and post it at your account. Tag me on photo and write @irina_krutasova under. Write a couple of pleasant words why you like my profile.⠀

3. Your profile must be open.⠀

4. Write "Done" under this photo.⠀⠀

You can participate until 23:00 (UTC+3) on June 24, Sunday.
On June 26, Tuesday, I will post some of the pages I like and hold a raffle with postcards.⠀

_________⠀

SFS😍😃⠀

Jackie Joyner-Kersee became one of the greatest athletes in American history. The first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the long jump and the first woman to compile more than 7,000 points in the seven-event heptathlon, Joyner-Kersee went on to win three golds, a silver and two bronze medals over four separate Olympics. She was named Sports Illustrated for Women's top female athlete of the 20th century. She literally didn't stop going where she wanted to go leaving behind the barking dogs.

With the second #JurassicWorld opening today, I figured I’d post appropriately one of my favorite #scifi movies: #JurassicPark, a landmark #summerblockbuster that forwarded #CGI in the film industry but also forwarded the idea of #DNA #cloning into the public consciousness. Loosely based on #MichaelCrichton’s book (which is way darker than this #stevenspielberg #1993 release), JP concerns a time where the #dinosaurs have been cloned, courtesy of DNA stored in fossilized mosquitoes, placed in a Costa Rica theme park in beta mode. A small team made up of paleontologists (#SamNeill, #LauraDern) & a mathematician (#JeffGoldblum) among them, visit the island which inconveniently becomes subject to a security breakdown & the creatures run amok. JP as directed by #Spielberg, is full of those classic Spielberg trademarks: an instant iconic #JohnWilliams score, grand and epic moments like the introduction of the #TRex, a sequence Spielberg & team don’t take lightly as one of modern #cinema’s most unforgettably constructed moments & plenty of humor to boot. The creature design work done by late great #StanWinston is really the central work here, cementing the #velociraptor as the ultimately lethal cinematic dinosaur (there’s a taut, terrifying chase sequence where the kids have to outrun & outwit the creatures in an industrial kitchen that is highlighted by intensely well done work from the creature design to the sound effects). To me, JP represents what cinema can offer the closest to the awe & spectacle that visiting the circus can offer the masses in terms of a grandiose experience for all ages. It’s absolutely stunning & a testament to Spielberg as a director, 18 years later after the success of Jaws, at the top of his game to craft a film that’s so distinct in its own way, that it’s more experience than anything else. Thus why JP may be one of the landmark movies of #20thcentury #film. #95daysofsummermovies #instafarting #cinefarting DAY 25

Martín Ramírez’s singularly identifiable figures, forms, line, and palette reveal an exacting and highly defined vocabulary, and they also show Ramírez to be an adventurous artist who embarked on remarkably creative explorations through endless variations on a few themes. Ramírez commemorated in all of his works the landscapes of Mexico and northern California; he recorded the hardscrabble territory of immigration, of living between borders, countries, and cultures. Memory, immigration, dislocation, and isolation exist in each line of his drawings. As a “border artist,” Ramírez displayed a kind of wanderlust for his meandering journey, and each composition thus became a beguiling act of documenting and, ultimately, sharing a life lived.
