The long journey to our summer holidays has started... they don’t look too happy about it! But just look at that sunset 🌅 
It began not without losing my cool at 730 yesterday morning and slipping into an unconscious rant! It was a proper reminder of the need for self care, sleep and slowing down 😳 
So here’s a commitment to myself to watch my triggers, take rest, eat well and gratefully observe the moments with each of my 4 bairns.

Sounds really easy when I put it like that, doesn’t it? But I’ve caught myself missing a few precious moments while being distracted by ‘an important email I just have to 
finish, darling’ or ‘a text I’m just sending, sweetie’ or some other external distraction. 
These long summer holidays provide us with such an exceptional and much needed opportunity to savour the time we have with our children.  As they relax and switch off from academic pursuits, their brains open up and creativity blossoms. 
So my intention is to get down on my hands and knees and absorb myself in the imaginative play that our younger 2 still delight in. And to sit quietly with our teenage 2, awaiting the moment they open a conversation and watch them direct it so I can gain more insight into their lives and strengthen our connection. 
To do that, I need to ring-fence time with each of them; the key to connection with each child when you have more than one.

contentment is acceptance of all emotions, whereas the pursuit of happiness assumes that happiness is the only goal. •
if we are in pursuit of happiness and we neglect and suppress the other feelings we may have - grief, loss, sadness, frustration, disappointment - they’ll come back to bite you on the bum, my friend. •
so acknowledgement and acceptance of those feelings which are negatively perceived, leads to contentment and, oddly, contentment is the closest we can get to consistent happiness. • 
if we can teach our children - normally by modelling and encouraging - to own all feelings - we help them to build emotional resilience and stronger mental health and through this breed contentment. (take note: do not ask your kids to name their feelings in the heat of the moment. that way lies their emotional vomit)

I came to Caroline when my little girl was 14 months and I was at my wits end from her not sleeping. Sleep deprivation really is a form of torture, and I was so exhausted that it was starting to impact every aspect of my life. Caroline’s approach to sleep training is not prescriptive, but tailored and takes into account your needs, desires and parenting philosophy. She listens carefully to your issues and then together you craft a plan that feels appropriate to your situation. She is very intuitive with babies (and parents!) and clearly very experienced, having gone through almost every sleep problem herself with her 4 children. We implemented a plan for my daughter’s sleep problems, and Caroline was supportive through each step of the process being in daily contact and providing useful guidance. Aside from the practical elements of the plan, she also provided coaching support to me as we went through the process. This is an important element, and I believe what differentiates her from many other sleep trainers. She anticipated the thoughts, feelings and emotions that I might experience, and empowered me throughout the process in a loving and conscious way. I am happy to report that the result was successful and my little girl now sleeps through 11-12 hours per night. I can’t thank Caroline enough and would highly recommend her services. 🙏❤️🙏

And these are the things that memories are made of. 
Not whizzing off to swimming squad training/early morning tutoring/cajoling into instrument practice/*insert your own bête noire. 
Trying to keep up with their peers and squishing round pegs into square holes to satisfy some notion of need - often our own - to impress others or give your child an advantage serves no one; especially not your child. 
They already are at an advantage because you care for them and love them. And that, my friend, is enough.

I was privileged to spend yesterday evening with an inspiring and beautiful group of women who are phoenixes growing from the ashes of domestic abuse. 
I am humbled to have been invited to talk with them about self-compassion and dropping the (Mummy) Guilt. About speaking kindly to ourselves and accepting our flaws. About recognising that we are the very best person for the job. About appreciating that we are our own best friend. And about rejecting perfection and knowing that imperfection is our human commonality.

I laughed hard and learned lots from this cracking bunch of warriors. You ladies rock. Accept the way you have been parented, the way you have parented and the way you are currently parenting. 
Most of us have had countless parenting moments when we would prefer to have done things differently. 
Be kind to yourself and accept these moments - and accept there will be more in the future. 
Only in doing so can we begin to make a conscious decision to parent more consciously. We can’t do this when our head is full of self-flagellation of previous “imperfections”! ‘Don’t cry’, ‘Be brave’, ‘Get on with it’.... We often encourage our children to suppress their feelings because our time or our tether is short. When we take the time to allow our child(ren) to name their feelings, we help them to build mental strength and resilience; this one is a long game! So if you have little ones, teach them ‘happy, sad, tired, hungry, frustrated’ and as they get older you can add ‘optimistic, cautious, distracted etc’. This is not ‘oh dear you are too tired’ rather ‘What are you feeling right now?
