Girl from the South Side and former First Lady. Wife, mother, dog lover. Always hugger-in-chief.
Writing BECOMING has been a deeply personal experience. It has allowed me, for the very first time, the space to honestly reflect on the unexpected trajectory of my life. In this book, I talk about my roots and how a little girl from the South Side of Chicago found her voice and developed the strength to use it to empower others. I hope my journey inspires readers to find the courage to become whoever they aspire to be. I can't wait to share my story. Please visit the website in my bio for more information.
As a young girl, even in my wildest dreams, I never could have imagined this moment. Nobody in my family has ever had a portrait - there are no portraits of the Robinsons or the Shields from the South Side of Chicago. This is all a little bit overwhelming, especially when I think about all of the young people who will visit the National Portrait Gallery and see this, including so many young girls and young girls of color who don’t often see their images displayed in beautiful and iconic ways. I am so proud to help make that kind of history. But the fact is that none of this would be possible without the extraordinary artist and woman behind this portrait, @asherald. Thank you, Amy – it was a joy to work with you and get to know you.
On the South Side of Chicago where I grew up, people like Kamau are working hard to make sure all of our young people can fulfill their dreams. Stories like this remind us that it's possible to create positive change in your community by sharing the things you love and supporting one another. Ellen, you make 60 look so good! Congratulations on yet another milestone. You make us all laugh so much, but you also warm our hearts. Thanks to you, the world is a more loving, welcoming, and joyous place for all of our children. And for that, @BarackObama and I couldn’t be prouder to call you our friend.
Thank you @BarackObama for the beautiful flowers waiting for me in the office this morning. You’re my best friend, biggest fan, and getting notes and flowers from you will never get old. And to the many people from around the country who sent cards and posted on social media, you have no idea how much we love hearing from you. I know birthdays can sometimes be bittersweet (54!), but your messages of hope, generosity, and warmth have always reminded me how lucky and blessed we are.
From the very beginning, @BarackObama and I knew the Obama Presidential Center had to be on the South Side. It’s where we met and where our girls were born. It’s home. We've been designing the Center as a place that inspires young people and gives them the tools they need to find their voices, then go out and change the world. It will be a place to learn, connect, and have some fun. The South Side will finally have a sledding hill, a vegetable garden like the one we had at the White House, and other attractions for Chicagoans and visitors from around the world to enjoy. Follow the @ObamaFoundation for updates, and let us know what you think!
It's been an amazing two days here in Chicago, and I want to give a shoutout to our inspiring community leaders and to all of YOU who have been part of the #ObamaSummit. Tonight, @BarackObama and I were joined by some of our friends, including @ChanceTheRapper , to celebrate the South Side. Thank you!
I have been watching with such awe as people across America have rushed to support our friends in Houston and communities along the Gulf Coast. This response represents the very best of who we are and what this country is about. In times of tragedy, as we lean on each other and come together as one American family to help our neighbors recover and rebuild, we are reminded of how much we all need each other. From those who have generously donated time and money, to the countless heroes who have risked their lives to save others, to @barackobama and our former presidents uniting to rally support, thank you for standing together.
