COLONIAL THEATRE HISTORY: On this day in 1978, the pre-Broadway tryout of Bob Fosse’s DANCIN’ played its first performance at the Colonial. It was during rehearsals for this show that Fosse famously chipped the onyx table in the Ladies’ Lounge while demonstrating choreography upon it. (The show also found itself in Boston during the notorious Blizzard of ‘78 and the aftermath of that storm). .

COLONIAL THEATRE HISTORY #fbf: This week in 1965, Neil Simon’s THE ODD COUPLE made its pre-Broadway debut at the Colonial. The show was directed by Mike Nichols and starred Art Carney, Walter Matthau and Carole Shelley. Opening on Broadway that March, it went on to win four Tony Awards. Simon credits Boston’s famed journalist Elliot Norton’s review of the Colonial tryout with inspiring him to rewrite the third act of the play for the Broadway run. .

A heartfelt brava to the legendary Carol Channing. No stranger to descending staircases, she’s pictured here on our Grand Staircase in 1980 with Robert Morse and members of the cast of SUGAR BABIES, as well as in the role of Miss Ginger O’Toole in SHOW GIRL in 1960, and as her iconic Dolly Gallagher Levi, which played the Colonial in 1994. 📸: Jon Platt, The Boston Globe and Martha Swope
